[olug] January 2018 OLUG Meeting

I like the slides, Dan. I really like the "nuke from orbit" reference. We
(the folks working directly with me) feel the same way around here now.
There is something so satisfying in knowing you can 100% reproduce a given
state. It is a built-in safety net. If something goes wrong, or if it
even looks at you funny, you just nuke it and redo it. It is the whole
pets vs. cattle debate.

It looks like you're doing what I'd call "Day 1 stuff"; getting VMs up and
running and networked in a consistent/repeatable/scalable way. We've been
using a mix of Ansible/VMWare and Kickstart to achieve similar results with
RHEL6/7. Even more satisfying still, I'd say, is what I call the "Day 2
stuff"; getting the all of the COTS and custom software
installed/configured on all the hosts you've just put into place. We're
using Ansible to do that as well (e.g. install RAC'd Oracle Databases,
install tools to support developers, etc.).

Thanks for sharing. We're working to downgrade and cleanse sensitive info
from our repos in hopes that I can share our Ansible playbooks/roles with
the community as well.
