[olug] ATI Linux Good now?

I know my laptop's older x1400 chip is rather nasty with the current drivers
that package with the kernel (it starts to flicker off and on). It's a pain to
find the ATI drivers off the ATI site; in fact, I've found myself at a page
recommending I go to my manufacturer's site to get drivers for Windows, and no
further links for any other OS. You can find the installer from ATI, but it's a
pain, and they seem to actually flat avoid giving laptops driver download links.
In this case, since I'm running an older Gateway Tablet PC that was going to
otherwise be thrown out, and MPC had the division that my laptop belongs in
(Gateway's Business Division), a lot of people are hard pressed to find
drivers. Fortunately it's no a huge issue with Linux, but those poor Windows
users don't even have a web site to go to any more, as MPC has been gone for a
couple of years.
In summary, at least with the x1400 in my laptop, ATI support from the kernel is
rather nasty, although ATI's non-free driver works, assuming you can find it.

I ran the Harry Potter books through a spell checker; none of those spells
should work.

What is the general consensus out there for ATI driver support in Linux? I have
avoided ATI for awhile now because this used to be poor but now I hear that ATI
has a supported driver pack out there? Is it safe for me to grab ATI cards and
use them? Can you please post your experiences for me?

Thanks!

Kenny
