I have had Linux on there before, slack9.1, mdk10, fedora, and solaris x86...I liked the slackware 9.1 the best, it really is a nice distro..."seemed to run fastest and not too bloated".
  I have a 1700+, 512MB ddr, 80gig maxtor uata-133, iwill xp-333R r.2.1 motherboard with onboard RAID by High Point,
I dont have raid enabled since I'm running only one drive right now.
I have tried fdisk and cfdisk.
fdisk /dev/hda gives me "permission denied" or access denied cant remeber at the moment.
cfdisk /dev/hda gives me "unable to open"
I just had solaris on there no problem, had mdk10 on there before that. This is the first time I've had a problem installing on this machine.
