Better performance... doing what?

Some filesystems perform better than others at specific tasks.

ext2 is a good general-purpose file system, as is ext3.  JFS, XFS, and 
Reiser are faster or slower depending on which specific benchmark you 
choose to run.

For the purposes of most people here, each one will work as well as the 
other - in many cases you will need to push the system to extremes to 
notice a difference between filesystems.
