you should check out the Forensic Incident Response Environment  (FIRE) 
It's a little over-kill for what you're looking for, but all the other
tools  

minimum requirements.   intel system, 128 mb memory
it's based on the 2.4.20 kernel and works with any network card known to
linux,  ide and scsi, etc etc...  I haven't found any hardware it
doesn't work on..  including firewire, usb, and pcmcia support. 

It's a live boot linux cd designed for forensic investigation, incident
response, and data recovery etc.

it has it's own gui and 4 shells, and all sorts of handy tools.
