I'd bet Nautilis is querying a hardward device, most probably your floppy.  
The ONLY thing that makes my linux boxxes hang is hardware queries.  I'd bet 
if you put media in your cdroms and floppy drives it would hang once, and 
then not again.  If this is the problem, I'm not sure how to tell Nautilus to 
stop looking at the floppy.
