Hi all,

Where: GoLUG: https://meet.xmlbrain.com/golug NOTE NEW URL!!!
When: 11/4/2026 7pm Eastern STANDARD time
      Arrive 15 minutes early for Microphone check & discussion
Who: Steve Litt, Troubleshooter, Developer, Tech Writer
What: Building your own Jitsi Appliance

Jitsi's been in the news lately for their new 95 minute meeting limit,
leading to discussions about alternative meeting venues. So I created a
Qemu VM Guest from Ubuntu Server 24.04.5, and turned it into a Jitsi
appliance. It runs at my house, and so far it had no trouble working
with four attendees. Wednesday night's meeting gives us an opportunity
to see how practical a home brew Jitsi at somebody's home can be for a
LUG meeting.

=================================================================
NOTE: If meet.xmlbrain.com/golug crashes and burns, out Plan B is
meet.jit.si/golug, but please don't go there early unless and until
necessary, because going to meet.jit.si/golug early would burn up the
95 maximum minutes.
=================================================================

I'll display Mental Model drawings of the Jitsi system and each of
its major components:

* Nginx
* Jitsi
* Prosody
* Jitsi-videobridge2 (JVB)

I'll also go over the various config files for each major component,
and the tests you can run on them. And I'll go over the main points of
the installation procedure. After attending this meeting, you'll have a
much easier time installing a Jitsi appliance like mine, although I
won't BS you: Jitsi does a lot and therefore has a lot of moving parts.

=================================================================
NOTE: My early research indicates that meet.xmlbrain.com/golug is much
easier to access with Chromium or maybe Firefox or Qutebrowser or
vivaldi-stable. I've tuned in with my Android App, but it was tricky,
tricky tricky. Also be aware that because you've never been to that URL
before, you'll need to give it microphone and camera access, just like
the first time you went to meet.jit.si.
=================================================================

Will meet.xmlbrain.com/golug handle the load? Will it be a pleasant
experience? Will it crash and burn? There's only one way to find out:
Be there!
