[olug] Edgerouter ideas help!!!!

Hopefully, this helps someone down the road. Stupid thing with so much
“Enterprise” tech and Ubiquiti EdgeRouters is that when they go sideways,
you have-to-have a serial cable connection. I loved making crossover
serial cables when I was a kid because I had teletypes and modems.
A few times, a EdgeRouter and maybe one of their Edge switches would
appear dead, completely dead just like the power supply is dead.
After a serial port connection finally responds (unplug and replug power
with serial cable in and then press Enter many times), there is the
equivalent to the well known RTC battery died “Press f1 to continue”
message. This was years and years ago, but it was something like “Press
Enter to run a filesystem check”. The boot process has not yet had
the chance to run the `blinkie` program, so no LEDs are lit up yet and
looks like power supply is dead. All that may have to be done is press
the Enter key and things are back to normal in five minutes.
When it loses its configuration (which it does when “professionals” like me
crisscross the dhcpd config with the dnsmasq config), the LED lights may
seem to work fine, but fubar is your reality. The config file is all
dorked up or just completely blank.
Connect a $8 serial / Cisco console USB-to-RJ45 cable from laptop to
router.
I have-to-have scripts just to connect because it is always unexpected and
an emergency, but things like baudrate and clear-to-send prove to be picky.
After resetting power, press the Enter key hundreds of times until the
EdgeRouter logon screen appears over the serial connection.
Once logged-in to the EdgeRouter via rs232, a previous config can be
restored by:
$> sudo su -
# configure
# echo “Run some configuration comparisons.”
# compare saved
# compare 0 1
# compare 1 2
# compare <TAB TAB TAB> to get a dated list.
# echo pick version X to go back to
# restore X
# <TAB TAB TAB> to find the commit and save commands.
# reboot
Sorry I did not think of this in a more timely manner, but circumstances
have forced me to relive so many tech nightmares recently, I cannot keep
track.
