Dell PowerEdge 2950 III 2x 3.16GHz QC X5460 32GB 2x 146GB HD PERC 6/i

is now ~$300 on ebay. I got one back in 2013 and it is my primary ESXi
server (currently on 5.5) - It will take 2Tb SATA drives and there is a
special ESX command to tell it to ignore the write ahead cache so that it
will quit complaining about them. Still running.

ESXi has an installer just for Dell. I messed around with many custom
boxen before finally just going with the flow and getting supported
hardare.
