[olug] htpc's was: All-in-one computers

We use the holy heck out of XBMC all over the house. It serves as our
local media player and front-end to the mythbox. As you said,
netflix/amazon don't run on it -- what a shame, but we have a Roku on each.
So if you want to watch something local or recorded - XBMC, from a
streaming service - Roku. I'd love to get it all on one but the local
media players for Roku are not that good and no mythbox support.

The NUC I just got (dual hdmi model) works pretty sweet and is very snappy
(i3 +hd4000) I put in a 8G stick and a 32GB mSata drive - a mickey mouse
power cord for the NUC and an HDMI cable and it came in at just under $400.
The zotac was an option or building a mini-itx all came in around $350
-- for $50 more I got a wow piece and 0 config problems. Just finished
getting things sorted out on the family room tv and the spousal approval
factor is high. (She already requested the same for the bedroom.)

I built a Linux based HTPC, but neither Amazon's service nor Netflix work
on it in Linux.

Boxee had a nice unified search, but no Netflix on the Linux build and
Boxee completely abandoned self-builders. XBMC doesn't have a unified
search across all content providers (last time I checked).

Now my TV has built-in apps for Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, etc. So does my PS3.
My HTPC gathers dust sadly.

Going back to the original subject, my primary objection to most All-In-One
PCs is that if you replace it, you're throwing that large display away.
That seems like a waste to me.
