on an older machine, the newer versions of ubuntu can be a burden on the
hardware. ubuntu 10.04 is good for older hardware, but anything more
recent, and you'll want to do a quite selective custom install.

keep in mind, lag is endlessly more frustrating for learning users. a
second or two for us, is an attitude-molding eternity to them.

if you are familiar with deb/apt systems, check out the original. nothing
beats slipping on a nice, clean install of debian.
