It really hardly took any extra effort.  It was certainly faster than
restoring from backup after 75% of the upgrade was done.

LTS releases are every two years, not every spring.  It really depends
on how you use the machine.  If predictable stability is more important
than having the latest version of your software, then the LTS releases
are for you.  That's what we do at work (a 30-seat software development
shop).  I'm still running 10.04 there, and probably won't get upgraded
until late this year if I'm lucky.

At home, I can't live with 2-yr-old versions of some of my software,
so I upgrade every six months.

Probably wise.  I wouldn't want a non-sysadmin trying to answer the
questions about which config files to keep vs overwrite.
