I've been getting some odd X11 behavior too. I can't say if it's strictly
due to Ubuntu, the NVidia graphics drivers, or with a heating problem with
my cards... I too run the "Classic" mode - the Unity desktop didn't like
working with my triple-screen / two card system and I don't need the eye
candy chewing up CPU+GPU resources.

My biggest annoyance is that X11 ramps up to 100% CPU (on one core). The
mouse moves find, but the screen stops updating (Xterm cursors stop
blinking, clock stops updating, etc), and Ctrl-Alt-F1/F2/F3 don't bring up
an alternative text console. I can ssh in
and try killing X11 but I usually just to a reboot.

What drivers are you using? I'm using nvidia-current
@ 270.41.19-0ubuntu1~xup~natty (per "dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia")
