if the ubuntu installer cant read the the partition table, you may want to
run some tests on the drive.

you could also boot into linux (without installing) and run gparted. this
may give you better partitioning results.

as another option, you could install a spare HD for linux partitions
(ext/swp) and leave the windows drive as is. if it's a laptop, you can get a
decent thumb drive and run persistence mode.
