Depending on what you're looking to spend.

Complete proprietary solutions, you might want to look at ReadyNAS or
DroboNAS.

Canned linux solutions, take a look at openfiler or freeNAS.  These have
specific
hardware requirements.

if you're looking to reuse old equipment or want to build your on solution.
I would
stick with linux system that are polished and well maintained, such as
ubuntu or
fedora, primarily for the hardware support.  With that, look for the "Big
Red RAID"
online.  It's an old setup guide, but finding updated parts shouldn't be too
difficult.
