[olug] ubuntu slowing down

I like Ubuntu as well but have noticed that post Fiesty Fawn (8.04?),
Ubuntu has been running slow for me as well. I'm running it on older
hardware as well (and old P4 Dell with 512M RAM). However, when I had
Fiesty installed, it screamed like a rocket and felt very nimble. I
think some of these newer Ubuntu releases are suffering from bloat.

You may want to explore some other Ubuntu derived distros (names elude
me now but I saw some mentioned on list) that are lighter weight. For
example, Mythbuntu uses XFCE as a desktop manager which is very
lightweight and runs great on my old hardware.

Aside from that, have you experimented with using other browsers? I
assume you're using the stock Firefox that ships with Ubuntu. Perhaps
Opera? There is an early development version of Chrome for Linux
here: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel
