A better choice might be the Dell Precision Mobile series, specifically
the M6400.

You can get them with 17" screens and they have 4 memory slots for a max
of 16GB RAM.

Additionally, you are guaranteed Linux support on any Precision desktop
or Precision Mobile laptop as Dell officially supports them with Red Hat
Enterprise.

You can get them for as little as $1300 refurbished from Dell via the
Outlet. Outlet prices are typically 40% off new, although I've gotten
lucky and gotten close to 60% off on rare occasions.

The standard warranty on a factory refurb'ed Dell is the same as it's
brand-new counterpart; in the case of a Precision Mobile laptop that's
3yr next business day.

OptiPlex desktops and Latitude laptops tend to use the same chipsets as
Precisions - ethernet & audio are the 2 biggies - so those are good
candidates for Linux machines as well.
