DBAN is not up-to-date on hardware support and most likely doesn't
support the SATA controller.

In all honesty I wouldn't bother, just deleting all the Windows
partitions and telling the Linux installer to use the whole drive will
be more than good enough; it's not like it's got military secrets on it.

PS make sure the parents are cool with this whole Linux thing; if you
give it back to them with FC (or Ubuntu or ...) and they expect it back
with Vista a "WTF" might be the least you get back from them.
