last time i tried a suse distro, it literally took overnight downloading
updates before i could put it into service.

(root ubuntu)
under login window prefrences (system->administration->login
window->security tab) there is a checkbox for allowing "local system
administrator", and "remote system administrator" login. it's blank by
default, and i've never used the setting, but something tells me you could
login root if you tried it. give it a try if you need a root shell that
bad...

just remember every application you run will have root priv., including your
web browser. very dangerous if you ask me.
