The main thing that most ppl seem to overlook is IO of the bus and discs,
also make sure you get good RAM with highest and safest frequency.

The Dell 1950 I have been using is basiclly limited by disc and bus, I may
have 16GB ram and 8 cores, but I cant really use them due to other
bottlenecks.
Also, if your doing DB intensive stuff, that will kill a hardware node
pretty fast. I am starting to like small db clusters with virtuals seperate.
If using MySQL, memcache will save your ass! :D
