I like/use godaddy for non-commercial sites or small commercial sites
who don't mind female sports stars in ads.  I use Thawte or Verisign
for commercial sites, but mostly this is just buying a name and
service level.

I don't really recommend using self-signed certs...The problem with
them is that they kind of teach people to ignore the SSL warnings.
This is pretty much always bad, but is probably really bad while there
is an active DNS vulnerability being exploited.
