[olug] Web Site Certificates - OT

Depending on ... how secure or not you want the thing to be, you can sign a
certificate yourself. It'll encrypt the traffic, but every time a user
connects they'll get a message box warning them that it wasn't signed by a
'real' authority... basically, the encryption will be correct but the cert
can't 'vouch' for the domain/ip (ie: anyone can sign their own cert and
highjack your domain to point to a different ip... and the end user will
still just get the same ole warning message box that your own site would
have given them).

I've used the "evil Godaddy" $20/year ssl cert for a couple years and
haven't really had any problems. But I've not really shopped around much.

Other price things to be wary of is if you need to include subdomains or
not, etc (they typically ramp up the price if ya do).
