Is it one server, many clients?

If so, have you considered writing a proxy for the server that would
guarantee only one process at a time:  A message queue or something that
acts like one.

That former client of mine -- they had one of those things (not written by
me).  When it worked, it was pretty slick.  Re-writing the proxy was where
I drew the line since when it was all said and done, it would still be a
150+MB Access backend which just ain't right.

Still, the problems with that setup were never a case of Access getting
confused and dropping transactions or locking out clients.
