[olug] eeepc experiences

I have one of the HPs (actually I bought it modified from HD Moore as a iPwn
http://ipwn.mobi/products.html), and for what I use it for, I could not be
happier. Due to the processor it uses, there is hardware crypto acceleration
which is VERY helpful for my purposes. The current model can be picked up
from amazon for the low end model at $300 now. Unit I have runs a modified
version of kubuntu that HD Moore maintains that is unique to the model, and
works very well.

HP has a new mininote that just came out, its black plastic instead of
silver metal, has a larger screen but lower resolution, and the Atom CPU
that everything else seems to use now. So, it is faster, but looses the
crypto acceleration.

Having used the mininote, the acer, the eee and the wind, I have to say that
the mininote is the only one I can use as a day to day computer without
feeling like I am making compromises. Right after I bought it, I took it
with me as my only computer to ToorCon and it performed fine. (Which is
great, as if it had let me down I would have been up a creek.) The Wind is
not bad either however, and worth a look if you are not going to use the
system as open and can get it for a decent price. The eee is not bad really,
as they have customized versions of ubuntu for the unit you can get it
modded pretty easy, but the keyboard sucks. I think you can pick the eee up
from Best Buy for $280 now. Turns out that the model Best Buy and the one at
Target are different, one has the celron with bluetooth and a web cam, the
other has an Atom CPU.

All in all though, the only real problem I have with my iPwn is that there
is no bag that I have found for it that does not look like a purse.
