For the time being the only way to 'for free' pickup digital signals is over
the air. Any antenna will do and all you will need is a digital tuner card
in the computer. With OTA signals you can pickup all your local stations
digitally and in HD all for free. It's very different from analog signals,
because analog can be fuzzy and you have to tune them in, while a digital
signal has to be on or off, you either have a perfect picture or none at
all, so the antenna has to pickup a better signal strength, but you always
have a perfect HD picture. I haven't used a myth-box, but I do have a
windows media center server and it works great. I had thought of using myth,
but I own an xbox 360 and it can be used as a media extender, so that's why
I choose the MS path, because having a server sitting next to your TV can be
loud. I have heard of folks using a mac mini for a myth TV extender, so
that's something to look into.
