I will second emusic. I found alot of older stuff that I was missing from my collection AND some really cool current stuff that the "big labels" have not corrupted (group and songs). Have not tried the Linux version...running on a Window$ box and moving around.

I'm a happy subscriber to emusic. They offer all of their stuff as
straight mp3's, no DRM. Of course that does somewhat limit their
catalog, but I've had no problem finding plenty of stuff that I like.

The one downside that annoys me right now, though, is they just changed
all of their subscriptions to reduce the number of downloads. No
explanation of why they're doing it.

Here's their comments regarding Linux:

Issue: Is there a Linux version of the eMusic Download Manager
  available?

A: eMusic provides a Linux version of the eMusic Download Manager,
however, development has been discontinued and we are not able to
provide technical support for this product.

You can download the files here (Linux.gz) and here (Linux.rpm).
Installation instructions and release notes can be found here. We
encourage you to check the eMusic Message Boards for additional tips
  on installation and use.

I haven't tried the Linux version of the software. Since there's no DRM
or issues with playback after it's downloaded, I've just been pulling it
down on my old Windows box and saving it to a Samba share.
