Even though i am on the road (Japan at the moment), i thought the
following email was interesting enough to warrant discussion. Bluejay
has been a HPUX machine for many years. Originally, they were going
to keep it running, but now they are shutting it down with
notification given in the bottom of a survey. You oughta read their 4
numbered bullet points below.

Dear Bluejay User,

This letter was sent to all Bluejay mailboxes at Creighton University but
depending on how your e-mail is configured you may be reading it
elsewhere. It requests that you take a web survey linked below. The
reasons for this survey are explained in the following text.

Over the last two years Creighton's Division of Information Technology
(DoIT) has invested considerable resources in the growth of a new
groupware system based on Microsoft Exchange. This initiative, called
CUmail, is intended to replace the Bluejay mail system which will be
retired.

All student mailboxes have already been moved. Current faculty and staff
are in the process of being migrated. There are, however, many others who
over the course of thirteen years have acquired Bluejay accounts. Some are
used frequently, some are abandoned.

The reasons for retiring Bluejay for mail and personal web space can
generally be summarized in terms of fiscal responsibility.

1. Bluejay is expensive to maintain regarding licensing and hardware.

2. Bluejay storage overhead continues to consume expensive disk space and
administration time.

3. Maintaining Bluejay consumes administrators' attentions that are needed
elsewhere.

4. While Bluejay is online for mail and personal web space DoIT support
resources are divided between it and emerging systems.

Before we remove both e-mail and personal web space services from Bluejay
we ask that you take a moment and fill out the survey at:

http://galen.creighton.edu/ss/wsb.dll/slc44378/BluejayEmailAssessment.htm

DoIT will use this information to determine who is currently using the
Bluejay system and develop timelines on how best to transition away from
Bluejay with a minimal amount of disruption to those persons.

Accounts that do not report a survey submission by July 1st, 2005 will be
added to a list of abandoned accounts and may be closed in a more
expeditious fashion in order to reduce overhead.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Please direct
questions regarding this letter to the Service Desk at 402-280-1111 or
servicedesk at creighton.edu

Sincerely,

The DoIT Customer Service Team
