If you're not able to boot the MacOS on the Mac in question, though, I'm not sure that you'll be able to get Linux to run.  Macs of the age you're working with require a MacOS to bootstrap Linux.  I'm guessing it would be the same even with a live CD, unless the live CD itself has a small bootable MacOS on it.

one has mac os8.6 and that's the only one i've played with... I tried 
using bootx but it didn't give me anyway to specificy the cd as a 
bootable image...

I'd frag the harddrive and just install linux, but I don't have any mac 
os disks so i don't want to delete anything important.
