I haven't tried live CDs with a Macintosh, but have successfully run Linux on vintage Macs.  (See OLUG topic for April.)  If you're not able to boot the MacOS on the Mac in question, though, I'm not sure that you'll be able to get Linux to run.  Macs of the age you're working with require a MacOS to bootstrap Linux.  I'm guessing it would be the same even with a live CD, unless the live CD itself has a small bootable MacOS on it.

Also, what do you mean autoload?  Macs generally don't search the CD as a boot disk unless you hold the 'c' key during startup.  If the MacOS is running, CDs can be made to autorun, though.
