1) video with dots
 This can be a BIOS issue or a x driver issue.  The old KT133 chipsets had 
problems with early nvidia cards where green dots would appear.  Changing 
an AGP setting and dropping the AGP speed down seemed to resolve the 
problem.  Try dropping to AGP2x then AGP1x. 

If that turns out not to be the case, it could be a driver issue with the 
X server.  Each driver has many settings.  Try setting your resolution 
lower.

2) run alsamixer and check the audio levels.  You may have the master 
volume turned up, but say, PCM (usually used by XMMS), check the CD Player 
input as well.  Through an audio cd in your drive and check it.

3) With ext3, you can always boot a linux rescue cd and recover your data 
because ext3 is backwards compatible with ext2.  In other words, you can 
mount your ext3 partition as a ext2 using Knoppix, Tom's Root boot, or the 
Linux Bootable Business Card very cleanly.
