Which distro?

anyway..........
You should be able to boot off of the install cd in 'rescue' mode
RH = linux rescue
Gentoo= just boot
knoppix= just boot

either way just boot off of a cd,
then mount your disk somewhere (RH will do that for you)
df #<-to check and see where things are mounted
(example - change for your setup)
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/tmp

vi /mnt/tmp/etc/passwd
(vi commands)
lllll #<--move your cursor over the start of the password
           #   in between the : :
dl #delete the character to the left of the cursor
:q! #if you fscked the file and need to start over without saving
:wq! # to save and exit

#vi cursor movement
h          #left
j          #down
k          #up
l          #right

use the 'dl' until you have closed the space between the :'s

if you just see and 'x' in the space between the : after root
i.e.
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
you need to edit the /etc/shadow file instead of /etc/passwd
