The encryption would probably slow things down but using the compression 
option may compensate.

I just ran some tests transferring a 44MB file.  The following numbers 
are in MB/s

ftp   sftp
38.0   9.0
54.9   9.9
57.6   9.8
57.2  10.6
57.3  10.5
