I've dug around the xbox-linux lists (almost NO traffic on them!) and
couldn't find anything. Nothing on the wiki either. The only details are
on the front page of xbox-linux.sourceforge.net:

13 September 2003: The Xbox phones home;

Microsoft updates your Xbox without your permission! Even if you don't
have subscribed to Xbox Live (and maybe being subject to the Xbox Live
EULA), Microsoft may update the Dashboard software on your Xbox without
notice.

If your network details are correctly set up, and you select the "XBOX
LIVE" entry in your Xbox Dashboard or select anything that has to do
with Xbox Live in a game (although you have not signed up to the Xbox
Live service), the Dashboard starts "phoning home", retrieving the
latest version and installing it - all you can do to cancel this is turn
off your Xbox.

The Xbox Linux Project considers this action unlawful at least in the
EU, because the Xbox EULA, which would permit this, is void in the EU.

12 September 2003: Microsoft has updated the Xbox Dashboard:

If you have Xbox Live, and you enter the menu item "XBOX LIVE" on the
Dashboard, Microsoft will do a forced update of the Xbox Dashboard (you
don't have the choice to say no) through your internet connection. The
new Dashboard has the font bug fixed, the font exploit will not work any
more.

Downgrading with MechInstaller does not work at this time, we're working
on it...

Don't update your Dashboard, or MechInstaller won't work any more!
