If you google for "monitor eye strain" or some such phrase you will
fined a plethora of ideas.

Personally when I first started using a computer I got one of those "non
glare" UV filters for my monitor.  I found it did help but it obviously
changed the colors projected.  That was a few years back so I would
imagine there are better options out there now.  I found my eyes
adjusted over time.  Which is probably a bad thing.  

Currently to combat eye strain I look away (across the room) from the monitor 
from time to time.  Make sure you blink also.  Sometimes a person can
become so intent on what is on the screen the body forgets to blink:) 
Glasses are probably a good idea.  I need them and have been putting it off as 
well.  There are protective coatings that can be embedded into the lenses for 
protection.  How well they work, I don't know.
