[olug] Ghost and Linux servers

I think I see what you want to do.
You want to store a ghost image from a user's PC on your Linux box via
network and make an easy way for that person to update and or restore
their image, right?
I did this years ago. I had a DOS boot floppy which would load netbios
drivers and batch scripts would ask the person's PC name (used in the
image filename). It would then ask to update or restore that person's
ghost image.
The images were on a Linux box, shared via NMB/ SMB. I used netbios
because I couldn't get tcp/ip to fit on a floppy.
It worked well, but that was in Win95 days and Symantec didn't own
ghost... I'm sure ghost's command line options have changed and XP is
very different from win95.
I'll have to look, but I'm sure I still have an image of that floppy. If
you want it as a reference to get started, contact me off the list.

If any of you remember when I had the OLUG meetings at St. Mary's, this is
how I restored all the computers in the lab after we were done with them.
:)
I left there four years ago and haven't touched a Windows server since.

For my operation, I need to create an image on the server and/or on the
second HD I installed in the system so when the end user FUBAR the current
install I can reinstall the default image and I am done.

How much space does a tar take? Or, how much does tar compress the files?
