If you are running the samba server as a PDC, I believe you need XP pro to
log into a domain, but for regular network shares - XP home will work fine
(use it on my winxp-home laptop to mount a samba share all the time).

I usually just prefer to use "smbclient -L //pcnetbiosname -U
username%password" to enumerate the network shares on a computer.  the -U
and user/pass combo is optional, only required if security is set as so on
the network share.
