OLUG happenings for June & July 2003

Good evening all!

Much OLUG happenings in the next few weeks, many opportunities to help out
the group, fellow users, & friends.

<B>First is updates to the web site:</b>
Tonight I went through and cleaned up the web links area
[http://olug.org/modules.php?name=Web_Links]. There were a few that were
dead links, or the address was missing a character or something. But I am
stunned that there is so few links.

What are the *nix places on the net that you go to? Any recommendations
for places to go on the web? Submit them and I will get them added ASAP.

<B>Installfest:</b>
Yes the fest is this Saturday, June 28, 2003 from Noon to 6 pm. Setup for
the Install fest will start around 10:30, and cleanup will start around
5:45pm. Be there, or be a nerd! ;)

There is a news story on OLUG.org
[http://olug.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=123&mode=&order=0&thold=0]
to get a discussion going about what to bring to the install fest – both
for seasoned members, individuals that will be helping out & for those who
are looking for assistance. Also the discussion was supposed to include
people volunteering to bring drinks & munchies. Funny, because no one has
yet!
Please feel free to add your ideas on what to bring – and what you would
like to bring snack & drink wise.

We have yet to have anyone volunteer to be 'greeters'; to welcome new
people when they come in, have them 'register' for the door prizes, and
make sure they are pared up with someone who can help them with their
needs. Also to keep an eye on everything, making sure nothing walks away
or any other problems. If you would be willing to help with the Install
fest in this specific capacity, please contact me off list.

Shutdown & cleanup will begin as the crowds start thinning (normally
around 5:30 pm) – the sooner we clean up the sooner we get to the after
fest gathering/fest review/planning meeting at Old Dundee. We could use a
few individuals to help set up & make sure everything is good to go. If
you would be willing to help with the Install fest in this specific
capacity, please contact me off list.

Big thanks to Craig & Thom for volunteering to help set up & make sure
everything is ready. Everyone should purchase a beverage of their choice
for them! (hint hint)

The after fest gathering/fest review/planning meeting at Old Dundee will
'start' whenever we get AIM cleaned & closed up (hopefully around 6:30
pm). As all ways, all are welcome to join in the conversation, discussion,
and planning for the upcoming OLUG events. Oh, not to mention some food &
drink! =)

<B>The Install fest poster contest update:</b>
So far I have seen posters placed by one other person; who will be getting
their fabulous prizes at the fest. Pictures may even be posted on
olug.org!

<B>July OLUG meeting announcement:</b>
The next OLUG meeting is scheduled for July 1st (just a few days after the
install fest), starting at 6:30 pm. The After OLUG and OLUG planning
meeting is held at the Old Dundee Bar & Grill (4964 Dodge Street Omaha)
approximately 15 minutes after the OLUG meeting is over.

Thanks to CM Miller for volunteering to present:

You've got your Linux box up and running
So now what?

Killer apps on & for Linux.

Chris will include covering apt-get, webmin, vim, mplayer, xmms, open
office, and a few others he has found to be killer Linux apps. Structured
towards the new Linux & Unix user, but his talk will be open to anyone
with constructive comments and suggestions. From the looks of it a superb,
back to basis presentation that everyone can glean some information from.
