'linux mount root=/dev/hda1 rw' is not really for install
as much as it is for booting to your already installed file system.
(i.e. i screwed up my kernel and now i can't boot at all, whip out
your install floppy and use this command to boot up and fix it)

with your boot kernel disk (usually bare.i) just hit
enter at the 'boot:' prompt. then insert root dsk when
needed (if your installing from floppy)
then login and run 'setup'

(I'm using slack 8.0)
