[olug] Squid setup

Ultimately that is what will happen. They other 2 schools in this test
will be running other OS's and cacheing software. I will have to play
with peer cacheing to see how it works. Looks fairly straight forward
when looking at the documentation. Squid is pretty well documented, I
was just unsure what would be some settings that other have found to
work for them through trial and error. Thanx!

I don't know much about optimizing Squid, but one thing that might help
would be to leverage the other High School proxy/cache servers using the
"cache_peer" options. If the LAN/WAN between the schools is faster than
their connection to the Internet, then you could setup the Squid proxy's
to peer with each other (and hopefully increase the hit rate), then fall
back to the Internet if needed. More than likely, someplace that is
viewed in one school will have a good chance of being viewed in another
school. Furthermore, if your ISP has a proxy setup on their end of the
connection, you *could* have your proxys go to it as another peer -- the
only problem with this is that you're probably going to start to see
some latency issues as each cache has to "miss" it's local database
(i.e. check the local proxy, check the neighboring HS proxy, check the
ISP proxy, get it from the Internet).

Don't quote me on all this since it has been a LONG time since I setup
Squid, and even then it was for just myself on my home cablemodem.

I have a working, and I use that term loosely, Squid cacheing server
but
I need a little help from those that have a know with Squid. Attached
is my Squid.conf file. Would anyone be kind enough to give me any
pointers as to what else to change to make things better? This is a
test we are running in the 3 high schools at Millard to see what
OS/Software to run a cacheing server on and you KNOW that I am
championing the cause. Anyhow, any hints or suggestions would be
GREATLY appreciated!! TIA!
