[olug] Wow... NetWare Migration Path...

Hi guys.

I'm actually out here in SLC and I was at the keynote where the NW 7
announcement was made. Not a lot of details, but it's a little more than
what someone posted previously (where you would boot Linux, then start
NW). From what they said you will be able to choose to run either the
Linux kernel or the NW kernel as the core of your NOS. I'm not sure how
they are going to do this, but, Novell is pretty much committed to
heterogenous, cross-platform network support.

As far as Apache, MySQL, Perl, and php go, I have news for you. You will
be able to run all of them on NW later this year. NW6.5 is supposed to be out this summer, and it supports all
of those. NW6 uses Apache now.

I went to a "Futures" session today, and Novell is working on making a
Linux version of their Desktop management suite (Zenworks). My guess is
they are 2-3 years out from having a version available, but I'm impressed
with what they a) showed they know about Linux, and b) have already
committed to it.

All in all, I think Novell is showing admirable forethought and boldness
to embrace open standards and open source.

Bill

We are a NetWare shop also and I look at this as a definite positive!
To be able to run Apache, MySQL, and other applications to tie,
natively, into NDS without having to change the config files extensively
and recompile to work with NDS would be WONDERFUL! I truly look forward
to it, if I have not moved on before then...who knows in this day and
age.

Sorry didn't follow the link. I work in a NetWare shop, my boss has
been a
true believer in NetWare for more than a decade. He told me yesterday
that the
version 7 will run natively on top of the Linux Kernel. That's pretty
cool. No
more having to load DOS on a machine just to boot into NetWare.

I'm also told they are going to officially support AMP (Apache, MySQL
and
PHP/Perl) so now you can have NAMP boxes in place of your LAMP boxes,
if you'd
like.

Personally, I'm sticking with LAMP. NetWare's always made a great file
server,
but Linux still has many advantages over it, IMO.
