[olug] grub doesn't show up

I just installed RH 8.0 but when I try to boot the machine I just get
the word "GRUB" with a flashing cursor in the upper left-hand corner of
my screen where the Grub splash screen and options should be. I can use
a floppy boot disk to boot the system, but I don't think that boots the
SMP kernel - therefore I really need Grub to work.
I believe the system is using the MBR.... whatever the default is on
RedHat 8.0 installation. 
The partition table is somewhat complicated but you can view it here if

Right now grub.conf looks like this:
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd2,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title RedHat 8.0 SMP (2.4.18-14smp)
        root (hd2,1)
        kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.18-14smp ro root=/dev/md1
        initrd /initrd-2.4.18-14smp.img

Any ideas what causes this or how I can fix it?
