You are correct, it's not static, it is DHCP, but the lease is so long you
can refer to it as a static, at least here in Omaha. YMMV.  To find out what
windows is using try:
    ipconfig /all       ...(from the command line)
or
    winipcfg        (gui version of ipconfig)
the command that is available depends on your flavor of windows.  it'll list
your ip, netmask, dhcp and other goodies.

I've got a few boxes running various OS's all connected via a linksys
router.  It makes my life simpler. Since I'm running BeOS, Linux, NT, 2K, 98
and 95 on the different systems its worth the hundred bucks to me since Be
doesn't support DHCP ala @home and versions of RH have had problems with
DHCP as well.  I can also enable/disable access to the internet for my
daughter's machines depending on my need.  Not to mention affording me a
little protection from script kiddies.  It still run an IDS/Firewall on my
main machine and snort on a linux box to see if I'm missing anything and AV
on all of the win boxen.
