I've tried to compile Livid a few times, but never was able to get it to
work. I've had a lot of success with Xine (http://xine.sourceforge.net),
and would reccomend it. It compiled easily for me, and there are
binaries available for several platforms. After installation there are 2
plugins that you will almost definitely want to install. One is
libdvdcss, this allows you to play encrypted DVD's (almost all DVD's
are). The second is DVDnav, this allows you to use the menus on the DVD,
without it you have to browse the vob files and select the chapters
manually. Performance has been good for me too, it's not too heavy on
the CPU, video quality is good, and it plays every DVD I own without
problems.
