lpd is the line printer deamon. Kde is pretty slick but I would recomdn you not configure system devices from kde because of the large variation of systems it is designed to run on. There are a bunch of things to watch when trying to ge tyour printer working. I use slackware 8.1 beta. Slackware ships with a ghostscript adn apsfilter. I was able to configure my apollo 1200p using that setup. I would recomend you read the documentation of the distro you installed and see if it recomends a program to setup your printer.

There are several commands to monitor your lpd.
lpq - view jobs in the queue.
lprm - remove lp jobs
lpstatus - check printer queue status

you can find all kinds of configuration and usage information at
www.linuxprinting.org

A printing howto found at www.linuxdoc.org remcomends pdq. I have never used it but the howto implies it is much easier to use. Good luck
