gAIM works with Yahoo (I don't know if this is the one you
were using).  Also gabber is available as an rpm (I gather that
this is your preferred method of package management?) from
rpmfind.net (just search for gabber).  I didn't have a problem
with gabber, but I didn't build it from source either.  If it's a
possibility for you, I would suggest trying to install the rpm
first.
