The smpeg-xmms plugins works quite well. It can go double size or fullscreen without desyncing the audio.  I would steer clear of the avi-xmms plugin though. For a standalone player, mplayer works very well. It does mpeg, mpeg2, divx and many others through several different methods of output. The lack of a gui is a little annoying at times, but he is currently working on one and it is almost ready.
