You might be surprised what that little ol' thing can do.

Believe it or not download speed isn't related to CPU power.  I have a
Sun SPARCstation IPX (a really slow RISC box from Sun Microsystems,
about as fast as a 486) than can nearly saturate it's 10mbit ethernet
line.

I think it's less a Linux problem and more a hardware issue.

What's the output of "/sbin/ifconfig" after one of those slow downloads?
