Shows what I know about RedHat, I'm a Debian user running a pair of
seriously hacked-up RedHat 6.x boxen :)

No, iptables only works with 2.4 & higher.

Gosh, it's been so long since I've run iptables modular...

Try these lines as root to start with:

rmmod ipchains
modprobe ip_conntrack
modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp
modprobe ip_tables
