[olug] X4.1 and savage4

My life was getting kinda boring so I decided it was time to live on
the PC edge again. I upgraded from Celeron 300A, TNT w/16MB (nice
stable linux support) to a SV24 that some of you may have seen on /. or
viahardware.com . It has socket370, built in firewire, usb, sound,
ata100, prosavage (savage4?) video, and it all fits in a very small
case. I chose the via C3 processor (cheap and efficient at 12W power)
at 800MHz. I recompile the kernel 20 or 30 times to make sure all the
hardware works. The distro is a pre-slack 8.0 slackware-current
install. It has X 4.0.2 (4.0.3?) that doesn't support the savage
video. I upgraded to X 4.1 using the binaries and now all I get are
unresolved symbols in every video driver. Thinking the problem might
be in the agpgart support I recompile many different ways to support
the agpgart and it always says "no compatible adapter found". I then
downloaded the 2.4.13 kernel and use the same settings. So I compile
the agpgart as a module and pass the agp_try_unsupported=1 to the
module.

modprobe agpgart (unresolved symbols and no load)

but

insmod agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1 (loads fine)

I retry Xfree -configure and I still get the unresolved symbols. I'm
now stumped. What do you think my next try should be?

Eric
