You can also use the host names in the xhost and setenv or DISPLAY=...
commands rather than the IP addresses.  Of course, the packets
comprising your X session can be easily intercepted by someone sniffing
packets between the two hosts using this method, hence the need for
ssh.  As John hinted, do not use "xhost +" without a host name or IP
address unless you want to leave yourself open to all sorts of
shenanigans.  In fact,

xhost [hostname|IP_address]

without the + will allow access from the specified host.  It might be
safer to not type the + just in case you're unclear about what you're
doing.  See the man page on xhost for more information.

This is a very cool feature.  I've used it in the past to display X
sessions running on the west coast on computers on the east coast.  Of
course, you have to be patient since refreshing is *very* slow over long
distances, especially over today's Internet, but it does work.
